Five Los Angeles rooms drawn from Time Out LA's beer garden guide, which steers away from single brand brewery taprooms. Two are German houses in Silver Lake and on La Brea, one is a Koreatown beer garden with a Korean kitchen, one is a downtown sausage hall and one is a Glassell Park craft beer patio.

The Red Lion Tavern · Silver Lake
Time Out says a beer stein shaped sign marks the street side bar, but the back patio is the point at this Silver Lake fixture, open since 1959. Owner Aidas Mattis and his family keep the Bavarian thread going with the Berlin bear, a three dimensional mural of beer toasting Germans and wall mounted tins from Warsteiner and Bitburger, both of which also pour on tap. Oktoberfest is an annual event here. Order the schnitzel or a sausage and take the patio.
Wirtshaus German Restaurant & Beer Garden · La Brea
Time Out points at the communal table on the dog friendly patio along La Brea and counts 35 beers and hard ciders, including a nonalcoholic option, with wine for anyone who wants it. The German kitchen sends out schnitzel, sausages and house made pretzels, and the room keeps a ping pong table, a flat screen and trivia. Oktoberfest comes with live music, food and drink specials and a ceremonial first tap. Order a house made pretzel and work through the German taps.
BiergartenLA - Koreatown
Time Out makes the case plainly: Biergarten fits the beer garden mold in every way except that its distanced parking lot patio only opened in 2020. Neil Kwon built the Koreatown room in 2010 as a vision of Berlin and Munich filtered through a Korean lens, so platters of brats arrive beside Korean fried chicken, kimchi short rib fried rice and a set of burgers. The tap list mixes Old World ales and West Coast IPAs. Order the brats with the fried chicken.
Wurstküche · Arts District
Time Out describes cousins Tyler Wilson and Joseph Pitruzzelli turning a triangular downtown space into a sausage kitchen, fitted with industrial geometric furniture Pitruzzelli built himself and a DJ booth. The grill runs from Polish style kielbasa to rattlesnake and rabbit, paired with a very large order of skin on frites. The taps are mostly Belgian and German and the handles carry no brand names. Order the Duchesse de Bourgogne, which the magazine calls notoriously tart.
Verdugo Bar · Glassell Park
Time Out writes that Ryan Sweeney, Brandon Bradford, Cherith Spicer and Kyle Bilowitz opened Verdugo with nothing but a sign reading Cocktails, and that the craft beer roster turned it into a destination anyway. The back patio added since then has communal seating and a wall of brewery tins, with food trucks parked in the lot and a weekly run of game nights, DJ sets and comedy. Order a beer off the draft list and claim a communal table.
