Clinton Cider Mill · Clinton
A Clinton mill that opens for its season in late August and still presses on the hydraulic press installed in 1927, with the Fehlner family running it since 1998. The press sits behind a window so customers can watch a batch go through. The Rome Sentinel found a steady stream of people buying cider donuts, cider slush and pies on opening day, and newyorkupstate.com says the donuts are made fresh in the on-site bakery in plain and cinnamon sugar. Hours run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., to 5 p.m. Sundays. Order donuts and an apple squeeze.
North Star Orchards · Westmoreland
A Westmoreland orchard on Route 233 that came back to pick your own apples after a May frost took a season of buds. The Rome Sentinel lists Macintosh, Cortland, Gala, Empire, Macoun and Spygold on the trees, and baked goods that include apple cider donuts, next to fresh cider, a free corn maze and pick your own pumpkins. The lower orchard opens daily for the first week of the season, then runs weekends and Columbus Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Order cider donuts and a jug of the fresh cider.
Windy Hill Orchard West · Cassville
A Cassville orchard open on autumn weekends, reached by a country drive along County Route 8, with a farm store of honeys, syrups, jams and fudge and cider poured chilled, mulled, hot or as a slushie. The Rome Sentinel says to arrive in the morning for a complimentary coffee and fresh apple cider donuts, then stay for lunch cooked out of the back barn by Lenny's Main Street Tavern. A firepit and live music from The Posers run through the afternoon. Order the cider donuts early and the salt potatoes at lunch.
