Jambo Cafe · Cerrillos corridor
Ahmed Obo grew up on Lamu, off the Kenyan coast, and has been cooking African dishes with Caribbean flavors on Cerrillos Road since 2009. The New Mexican's reviewer called the goat stew his signature: Caribbean-spiced, cooked long and slow until the meat falls off the bone, sweetened faintly by allspice, ginger and cinnamon. The jerk chicken sandwich and jerk wings carry a heat that builds slowly. Sop up what is left with the roti, which is layered and almost buttery.
Ras Rody's Jamaican Vegan · Agua Fria
A food truck on Agua Fria parked next to the chef's own house, rose bushes at the door and an organic garden squeezed in behind it. Ras Rody has cooked ital, the Rastafarian plant-based tradition, for more than forty years, and picks each day's menu after juicing spirulina and greens from that garden. The anchors are a combo platter, a soup, a juice and a smoothie; the New Mexican singles out his curried jackfruit in coconut sauce with turmeric and escallion as the dish to ask for.
