Sage Bakehouse is the artisan bread bakery, pastry shop and café that Andrée Falls opened in 1996 and still runs, with crusty farm bread at the center of the menu and a pastry case beside it. The morning crowd comes for scrambled egg tartines on that toasted bread and for the pastries. Order the scrambled egg tartine and a vanilla bean cream cheese Danish, and take a loaf home.

Clafoutis is the Ligier family's French bakery and restaurant on Cordova Road, where Philippe Ligier does the baking and Anne-Laure Ligier greets guests with a cheerful bonjour, with their daughters working alongside them. It opened on Guadalupe Street in 2007, where regulars lined up for a tiny, tightly packed dining room, and later moved to larger quarters on West Cordova Road.

Chocolate Maven Bakery & Café sits in a row of industrial-looking buildings off San Mateo Road, a bakery Dharm Skotting-Segal and Cassie Ramos have owned since 1993, and its case is a wonderland of buttery croissants, fudgy brownies and frosted cupcakes. Locals come for breakfast and lunch as much as for the sweets, and at the holidays the triple chocolate Bundt cake and the chocolate raspberry torte take over. Order a croissant, or the torte for a party.

Mille is Marcel and Stephanie Remillieux's French bakery and café on Alameda Street, in the former Bouche space, from the couple who ran Fleur de Lys in Los Alamos. The counter holds fresh-baked croissants, pastries and macarons, and crepes are made to order, served hot with the filling melted into the folds. Order a macaron and a Nutella crepe with strawberries and whipped cream.
